Ups, da wird man am „Googleplex“, dem Google-Hauptquartier in Mountain View, aber gar nicht happy sein: Der Silicon-Valley-Nachbar Apple hat die Google-Telefon-Software „Google Voice“ für das iPhone kurzerhand aus dem Apple App Store verbannt. Offizielle Begründung: „Duplicating built-in iPhone features“ – sprich Google Voice übernimmt Funktionen, die das Apple iPhone bereits integriert hat, wodurch Apple eine Kannibalisierung der eigentlichen iPhone-Telefon-Funktion befürchtet.
Ohne Zweifel: Hintergrund der Sperrung ist auch Stress mit dem Mobilfunknetzbetreiber AT&T, der das Apple iPhone in den USA exklusiv im Programm hat – und durch die Gratis-Telefon-App von Google/Google Voice massive Einnahmeeinbußen fürchtet. Schließlich erlaubt Google Voice nicht nur Gratis-SMS-Versand, sondern auch supergünstige „Long Distance“-Ferngespräche.

We work hard to bring Google applications to a number of mobile platforms, including the iPhone. Apple did not approve the Google Voice application we submitted six weeks ago to the Apple App Store. We will continue to work to bring our services to iPhone users — for example, by taking advantage of advances in mobile browsers.
