ViewSonic Announces Worldwide 3G Smartphone Initiative

Natural Extension of Product Line Completes 3” – 300” Screen Product Offerings

WALNUT, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–ViewSonic® Corp., a leading global provider of visual display products, today announced plans to expand into the 3G smartphone industry, making its 3” – 300” product line a reality. China will be the first region to carry the phones, followed by Europe and the Americas.

This marks ViewSonic’s first product in the smartphone market, but falls in line with the convergence of televisions, computers and mobile phones. As the demand for mobile phone functionality increases, ViewSonic’s heritage in display technology plays an important role in the development of smartphones. Consumers are demanding larger screens, greater color saturation and contrast to take advantage of new services such as mobile Internet, television and video applications, gaming and eBooks.

According to a March 2009 report from iSuppli, an optimistic forecast for global smartphone unit shipments is 192.3 million in 2009, up 11.1 percent from 173.6 million in 2008. Furthermore, the scenario foresees a unit shipment Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 21 percent from 2008 to 2013.1 Also, in September 2008 comScore reported that the number of U.S. subscribers with 3G enabled devices grew 80 percent to 64.2 million during the past year.

“With 20 years of display experience this is a natural extension of our product expertise,” said James Chu, chairman and chief executive officer of ViewSonic. “This is an important strategic step for ViewSonic, as it allows us to apply our display technology to an even larger and rapidly growing worldwide market.”

Following successful market entries with LCD monitors, LCD TVs, projectors, digital signage displays, digital photo frames, computing products and other display solutions, ViewSonic is well positioned to take advantage of the rapidly expanding 3G smartphone market.
